Cyber attacks and hacking are very dominant these days. I think it is also impossible staying away from the internet nowadays because a lot of important things we do are in it.

In his testimony before the US House Committee of Energy and Commerce, Bruce Schneier emphasized the urgent need to address the security risks posed by the Internet of Things (IoT) devices. He pointed out that the recent series of DDoS attacks, which were carried out using compromised IoT devices, have highlighted the vulnerability of the internet infrastructure to such attacks.

Schneier argued that the market for IoT devices is currently operating without adequate regulation or standards of use, which is exacerbating the security risks. He called for the creation of a government entity that would be responsible for regulating the market and setting standards for the use of IoT devices. This entity could work with manufacturers, consumers, and other stakeholders to ensure that IoT devices are designed with security in mind and that they are deployed and used in a secure manner.

Schneier also emphasized the importance of collaboration between the public and private sectors in addressing the security risks posed by IoT devices. He suggested that the government could work with industry and academia to develop best practices for securing IoT devices and for responding to security incidents.

Overall, Schneier's testimony highlighted the urgent need for action to address the security risks posed by IoT devices. Without adequate regulation and standards, the proliferation of these devices could create significant vulnerabilities in the internet infrastructure and pose a threat to national security and public safety.

The internet is no longer a web that we connect to. Instead, it’s a computerized, networked, and interconnected world that we live in. This is the future, and what we’re calling the Internet of Things.

Computer security has been around for almost as long as computers have been. And while it’s true that security wasn’t part of the design of the original internet, it’s something we have been trying to achieve since its beginning.

During his testimony, Schneier emphasized the growing danger posed by the proliferation of insecure IoT devices, which are often manufactured without any security considerations. He warned that the lack of security in these devices could allow them to be easily hacked and used for malicious purposes, such as launching DDoS attacks, and that the threat would only continue to grow as more IoT devices are deployed.

To address this problem, Schneier called for the creation of a government entity that would regulate the IoT device market and set standards for their security. He argued that the government had a responsibility to protect its citizens from the potential harm caused by insecure devices and that regulation was necessary to ensure that manufacturers took security seriously.

Bruce Schneier, a renowned security expert, delivered a talk on the state of the Internet of Things (IoT) before the US House Committee of Energy and Commerce. The hearing, titled "Understanding the Role of Connected Devices in Recent Cyber Attacks," was held on November 16, 2016, at 10:00 a.m. in the 2175 Rayburn House Office Building. It was conducted jointly by the Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade, and the Subcommittee on Communications and Technology.

The purpose of the hearing was to examine the recent wave of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks that were carried out using compromised connected devices. The goal was to gain a better understanding of the current measures in place to counter these attacks and explore potential future efforts to combat malicious actors targeting vulnerabilities in modern digital infrastructure.

During the hearing, Bruce Schneier emphasized the urgent need for a government entity specifically dedicated to addressing the growing use of IoT devices. He argued for the creation of an organization that could regulate the market and establish standards for the usage of these devices. Such an entity would play a crucial role in mitigating the risks associated with the widespread adoption of IoT devices and ensuring their security.

Schneier's testimony highlighted the importance of taking proactive measures to address the security challenges posed by the IoT. His recommendation for a government entity reflected the need for coordinated efforts to establish guidelines, regulations, and best practices that could enhance the security and resilience of IoT devices.

By setting standards and regulating the market, it was believed that the risks associated with insecure IoT devices could be mitigated, helping to safeguard digital infrastructure from potential cyber threats and ensuring a more secure environment for the deployment of connected devices.
